THE MARTIAL ART
This month we’ll be entering the amazing world of Qigong with the gentle guidance of Bina Bou. Bina is a certified instructor of Qigong and Tai Chi who enjoys sharing her knowledge with her students in Cave Creek and other locations in the Phoenix, Arizona area.

DEFINITION OF QIGONG
I began with Bina’s website (www.binabouchi.com), which answers the question “What is Qigong?” Long used in training for the martial arts, Qigong is described by Bina as an exercise “designed to cultivate your Mind,Body, and your Spirit; and revitalize your Chi, the life force energy, by deep breathing and synchronized movements.”Qi or Chi means energy—a resource so essential it is impossible to define or translate Gong or Kung means to cultivate—a practice or methodology.

Qigong, therefore, refers to the exercise of one’s internal energy, and is a path to Mindfulness. Intention – Attention – Repetition – Guidance.

While everyone has Qi, most people don’t know how to tap its potential for healing and stress management. Qigong training allows practitioners to learn to relax and develop their mind-body connection. Through slow and gentle movements, Qigong has the practical benefits of providing balance and enhancing the body’s own natural healing—benefits which are documented in numerous medical publications.

With this background on the Qigong tradition, I attended one of Bina’s classes. To warm up, the group of about 24 gathered together in a large circle. You could feel the effervescent energy rippling around the room. We started with some wonderful, uplifting music and reflexology for the feet. We accomplished this
by walking in a giant circle, first on our toes, then on our heels, followed by the outsides of our feet, and finally on the insides of our feet. Next, we continued to walk while kicking out to the front, and then kicking our tushes, kicking out sideways, and lastly, marching with our knees up high. The room was filled with smiling faces, exuberant walking, and good cheer. Oh, and did I mention that the participants in the class ranged in age from 55–83?

Qigong can be used for its martial, healing, or meditative aspects. Bina says that Qigong is the mother of all martial arts, and that with slight variations it can be used for each of these goals. According to Dr. Jwing-ming Yang, a well-known teacher and author in the field, there are two separate trains of thought in the Qigong schools focused on martial arts. One, Nei Dan, believes that one should build Qi in the body and then have that spread to the limbs to increase their martial effectiveness. The other, Wai Dan, follows the belief that you should build up the Qi in your limbs and then have it flow inward to your internal Qi. This type of Qi can be used to “energize the skin and the muscles, enabling them to resist a blow without injury.” Both schools teach that by harnessing the focus of the mind (Yi), you can send Qi to the muscles and increase your fighting effectiveness. The progression of acupuncture theory also increased the effectiveness of Qigong as a martial art. By gaining a thorough knowledge of the acupuncture meridians, a Qigong practitioner would know the most effective cavities to hit and the necessary depth at which to strike. This combination of knowledge had made for a formidable martial art.

The meditative aspects of Qigong can be as simple as enjoying the focus and stress release of the movements, or as in-depth as the intense Marrow/Brain Washing, a level of training revered and kept secret from all but a handful of practitioners in every generation. To learn more about this area you can read the Marrow/Brain Washing Classic by Da Mo. Da Mo wrote this book about energizing the brain and attaining enlightenment after nine years ofseclusion in a Shaolin Temple.

Bina Bou has focused her practice on the healing properties of Qigong. I was impressed by how her students were brimming with health. Don’t be mistaken— many of her students have faced and overcome health obstacles that would have stopped others in their tracks. Take, for example, Debra, who developed a serious illness and was having difficulty with stamina and balance. Debra had been in a wheelchair before she started working with Bina. After a few months of Qigong practice, Debra was helped to the extent that she is now walking freely. But more on this later; back to the class…

Let me  tell you a about a relative who had a heart attack in a mall one afternoon in December. Wisely, and frankly uncharacteristically, he made his way to the shoe department of Macy’s, which luckily was near an exit door, and complained to a cashier of pain in his chest. The ambulance arrived quickly and loaded him in. En route to the hospital, he went into cardiac arrest.

Fortunately, he was in trained hands who administered CPR and swiftly used an AED (automatic external defibrillator) to shock his heart and bring his pulse back. By the time I arrived, he was in the ER, laying in the recovery position (on his left side)—ashen and still, but alive. Alive, with the necklace he bought for his wife still clutched firmly in his hands. In the weeks to follow, as we celebrated the holiday season,
my family was acutely aware of how very close we had come to spending this time in a very different, very dreadful manner.

There is much to learn from this story. One thing for sure is to not ignore the signals that our bodies communicate to us. Another lesson is to call for medical help immediately, as the cashier did. Had one or two of those elements not been acted upon exactly as they had, this gentleman may not have been in the ambulance when he arrested. And what if he had not? Would another set of capable hands been available to save his life? Did anyone in the store know what an AED was, or where it was? I am grateful to leave that an open question in my mind. However, there is another lesson to be learned from this experience. What if someone were to go into cardiac arrest in front of YOU? Would you know what to do to save a life?

My relative was shopping alone that December afternoon, but what of the person whose family is standing witness, screaming for help to those who are unable to provide any? That sort of helplessness is a hell all its own—and it happens every day. People watch as others die. Anyone can learn CPR—and everyone should.

WHY TAKE ACTION?
• Failure to act in a cardiac emergency can lead to unnecessary deaths.
• Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival, but only 32% of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander.
• Sadly, less than 8% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital survive.
• The American Heart Association trains more than 12 million people in CPR annually, to equip Americans with the skills they need to perform bystander CPR.

THE GOOD SAMARITAN LAW:
The Good Samaritan Law protects individuals who assist a victim during a medical emergency. Every state in the United States has a Good Samaritan Law or Act to protect individuals who offer reasonable aid during a medical emergency.Since a Good Samaritan typically does not have medical training, the law protects him or her from being liable from injury or death caused to the victim during such assistance. As long as a layperson has good intentions to aid the victim to the best of his or her ability during a medical emergency, he or she is protected under the Good Samaritan Law. Under some Good Samaritan Laws, as long as medical personnel, such as doctors, nurses, or medical responders, are following normal procedures, they too will be protected under the Good Samaritan laws. Each state law has specific guidelines.

AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL
DEFIBRILLATORS:
Automatic external defibrillators (AED) save lives. An AED is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and if indicated, can deliver an electric shock to the heart to try to restore normal rhythm.

CPR/AED classes are taught nationwide, and many are taught for free. CPR/AED can be learned in one day, in just a few hours. Contact your local Fire Department for more information. Make sure the CPR course you inquire about also teaches AED. Many also teach child and infant CPR/AED, adult and child choking, and first aid. There is no excuse not to learn these life-saving techniques. Get going, get trained, learn how and when to use your training, and be prepared! You may never know when you may be called upon to save a life.

Ingredients:
• 6 scoops Vanilla Ice Cream
• 1 Cup Graham Cracker crumbs
• ½ tsp cinnamon
• 1 Egg
• 1 T Half-and-half
• Vegetable Oil (enough to make ¼-1/2 inch of oil in bottom of pan)

The Process:
1. Scoop Ice Cream into balls and freeze for two hours.
2. Mix Graham Crackers and cinnamon.
3. Roll ice cream balls into the mixture and refreeze for at least 30 minutes.
4. Beat egg and cream until well blended
5. Roll Ice cream balls into egg mixture and reroll in graham cracker mix.
6. Freeze until firm.
7. Freeze until firm. Heat oil to 375 degrees, fry until coating begins to brown. About 10 seconds.

To make homemade whipped cream. Whip 1 Cup of heavy whipping cream, 3-4 Tablespoons of confectioners sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla until fluffy.

Soon we will be caught up in the holiday spirit, unfortunately, so will criminals. Criminals know people will be preoccupied with holiday to-do lists, less attentive of their situational awareness, and people will have more valuables on them during the holiday season.

There is a reason why shopping centers hire more security guards during the holiday season. Local police know they will be receiving more calls for home burglaries.

You and your family can prevent yourself from being victimized by following some simple precautions, both at home and at shopping centers, which are listed below:

HOME SECURITY

• Keep window blinds closed when not at home
• Keep outside lights on during night
• Post Holiday vacation pictures on social media after you have returned from vacation
• Have a trusted neighbor watch your house while away, collect mail, trash cans and maybe even park their car in your
driveway while you’re gone.
• Keep some inside lights on timers to go on and off at different times during night.
• Put a radio on a timer so it goes on and off at different times of the day.

SHOPPING CENTER PARKING LOTS
• Do not allow yourself to be distracted when heading to your car, no texting, no headphones, no cell phone.
• Have your keys in hand before leaving to go to the parking lot. Place a key between pointer and middle finger so it can
be used as a weapon.
• Park under a well-lit areas, and try to back in the parking spot for quick exit.
• Check your car before getting in, glance in backseat.
• When using your remote, use it in the mode that only unlocks the driver side door.

How many of you have ever wished for more hours in the day? I think most of us at one time or another have felt the pressure of too much to do and too little time. There are only 24 hours in each day. What if you could use all 24 . . . every single day? Just think about how much more you could accomplish! Of course, you have to train yourself to function without any sleep. You have to eliminate that wasteful use of 8 hours each day. One third of your day . . . unnecessarily spent with your eyes closed.

What? You don’t think you can do that? You don’t think it’s healthy or the right thing to do? Well, how else are you going to achieve your goal of getting more accomplished in your 24 hour day? Just decide you are going to do it and summon up every ounce of willpower you can muster!

Of course, we all know how the above scenario will turn out. Your willpower may get you through one day without sleep, but the true needs of your body will soon take over and you will fall asleep. And it was NOT the fault of a wimpy willpower!!! In fact, it had nothing to do with your willpower whatsoever.

The definition of “will” is “the faculty by which a person decides on and initiates action.” Willpower, then, would be the control of that decision making process. Obviously, the main emphasis in that definition would be on the word, “control.” And herein lies the answer to the universal complaint of all dieters: “I just didn’t have the willpower to continue.” “I fell off of the truck. It’s all my fault.”

Let me make it very clear right here that I strongly believe in personal responsibility. One needs to understand that actions have consequences and we reap what we sow. That being said, however, we need to examine the control factor with willpower and diets.

Most diets are designed with deprivation in mind. The HCG diet, for example, is built on severe calorie deprivation where the dieter must eat only 500 calories each day. Since most adult basal metabolic rates (BMR) are above 1200 calories, this is destined to fail. Your BMR tells you the amount of energy (calories) your body NEEDS just to function. That means sitting on the couch all day, breathing, but not moving. So if you are providing your body less than half of what it needs to function, what do you think will be the result? Do you think your body, which desperately wants to survive, knows that you are simply trying to make your gut smaller by consuming only 500 calories? NO!! Your body knows that in order to keep functioning, it
MUST find nourishment quickly. So it sends the appropriate hormonal cascade into action that signals hunger. Starvation, in fact. Ignoring that signal becomes impossible. It has nothing to do with your decision to lose weight. It has everything to do with the control of the hormones and the central nervous system that environment.is hard-wired for survival. It is not the dieter’s “fault” that they “fell off of the truck.” The fault lies with the diet that is completely counter to supporting the body
in a healthy way.

Think back to my ludicrous suggestion that you could “will” yourself to stay awake 24/7, without any sleep. You, of course, rejected that idea as a valid solution to getting more done each day. You knew that not getting sleep is harmful to your body and to your productivity levels. The only ending to that scenario is one in which the body takes over and controls the situation. Your willpower means nothing at that point, right?

So why do we insist on diets that are just as ludicrous, just as harmful to our bodies . . . and believe that we can “will” them to work for us? Restricting calories severely, eliminating an essential food group, or even excessive exercising in order to “purge” are all misinformed ways to approach weight and fat loss. They are destined to fail and will not provide the long term result of a healthy body that really is what we are all seeking when we go on a diet.

Consider my opening example again. What would be a better approach to accomplishing more in each day? We might focus on improving efficiency and effectiveness throughout the day instead of just adding hours. Who is in control in that situation? We are. We can decide to write a chapter in our new book instead of watching that mediocre sitcom on TV. We can meet by webinar at work instead of traveling to each different location. Making choices and utilizing our decisions to “initiate actions” give us the opportunity to work on our willpower because control is appropriately ours to exercise in each situation.

Now translate this same idea to losing weight. What is in your power to control? How can you use your willpower to help? Instead of working against your body by depriving it of certain macronutrients and consuming too little, work with your body to help it function at a higher metabolic rate and encourage it to release its stores of fat. When you eat quality ingredients and include a lean protein, a complex carbohydrate and a good fat with every meal, you send a signal to your body that it can have confidence it will receive what it needs and it won’t starve. In an atmosphere of abundance, your body will willingly release fat and not feel the need to store more. You can then use your willpower to focus on eating quality and not giving in to overly processed, sugar-filled, non-nutritive food. And your body will support you in this pursuit instead of taking over control because it feels threatened. There is no need to “fall off of the truck” because you, your willpower and your body are all working towards the same goal of being healthy !

One of the greatest concerns parents face today is the challenge of keeping children safe in a fast moving and ever
changing world. The world we live in today is not the same as the one we grew up in. We grew up in a much smaller and slower
moving world than that of today’s youth.

When I was growing up, I played outside from morning until the streetlights came on with little-to-no adult supervision and in relative safety. The streetlights indicated dinner time, which was a cherished family gathering around the dinner table. We enjoyed our meal together and conversation of the day’s events. This was our time to connect. Television was a part of life, but not the main focus. We had a telephone on the wall, and when someone was talking on it, the rest of the family was quiet and respectful. With no cell phones, Dad was only summoned at work if the house was on fire or an equally important emergency! We learned to problem solve because we had to.

Another important factor, which was much different than today, was that we lived in the “now” reality. While actually
doing something without a cell phone or computer at hand, we were forced to focus on our activity. Creativity flourished,
delayed gratification was a developed by the natural wait for things, and it was not so easy to be distracted from any negative consequence of actions that may not have been in our best interest! Today we do not live in the now, we live in the “screen,” and such fixation can be a sure impediment to learning necessary life lessons. Often, children make choices not by a set of family values but by what others are doing. They are all too quickly aware of and informed in the advent of this “selfie” society, where good examples are hard to come by and even harder to filter. If we want our children to grow up and live in a safe world, we need to teach them to make good choices. When it comes to self-defense, children and young people are often at a disadvantage. They are smaller, weaker and more easily influenced than most adults. However, this is also the precise time period when the most important form of self-defense self awareness, can be developed. This is when the mindset can be formed and if we teach good safety habits when our children are at a young age we have a head start!

Train your children to be aware. Awareness is lacking more now than at anytime in the past. Most situations can be avoided by simply being aware of the world around you. Teach your children that they need to pay attention to what is happening in their environment. They won’t learn this on TV. Let your children make their own decisions, guided, of course, by your sound judgment. By allowing your child to seemingly make their own age- appropriate decisions as soon and as often
as possible, they build their insight, ability and confidence in making sound choices. When children are allowed to make their own decisions, they learn by their own successes and mistakes which path of judgment is best. When we learn, we grow our minds, and our ability to problem solve increases. The more problems solved on their own the better, and the better equipped they will be in life.

Additionally, if children are respected for their good decisions, they will treat others with respect as well as be able to
recognize “disrespect.” This is an important factor in developing healthy personal boundaries. This will translate to a day to day skill set, making the on screen challenges seem more like the fiction it is. Your child will be able to recognize real warning signs in the real world, and will be able to avoid tangible potential problems unlike the drama scenarios they see on TV. Remember, the key here is age- appropriate decisions with your guidance.

Remember to connect with your children on a daily basis. Find a ritual and stick to it. Dinner can be difficult with kids
on the go, but it is very important to do your best to make that work. On the nights where it does not, have a plan B for connecting. Don’t let a day go by.

In a world where people are endlessly challenged to make safety decisions, make sure your children learn well how to interpret information and do what they think is best. Hopefully, they will grow to be the person who can teach their children the same!

Fall is a natural time of transition and an ideal moment for a gentle detox cleanse that will reset your body and mind, and prime your system for a winter of wellness. Ayurvedic practitioners say
it’s important to slow down, support your liver’s natural ability to remove toxins from the body, and take stock of the influences that you allow into your life. From the foods that you place in your mouth, the people you surround yourself with at home and at work, the joy and stress you embrace in your life as well as the other emotions you choose to hold on to. Doing this review and release, will protect your health year round. Particularly in the fall, as we begin to modify our eating patterns due to new school and work patterns, and we adjust what we eat and cook to the new seasonal fruits and vegetables locally available. Fall is a great time to harvest and prepare for the new way we want to live our lives.

We know that the air you breathe, the water you drink, the food you eat are polluted and contain toxic chemicals. The prepackaged or mass produced foods we eat are loaded with sugar, preservatives, colorings and additives. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy may contain chemicals, pesticides and hormones. All of us face these toxins in our everyday life and we absorb them into our lungs, skin and digestive track. Your body fills with toxins stored in fat and then your body stops functioning properly You can’t sleep, you gain weight, you are bloated and you
are constipated. Your body wasn’t made to function with all these toxins. Think of a small baby, who has not been exposed to toxic pollutants. They eat, then right afterwards they release the waste from what they have eaten. As we get older that isn’t how it works for many people; many people eat and maybe they are not able to release the waste for 2 or 3 or 4 days or even a week. You have to ask yourself, where is this waste from these 6, 9 or 12 snacks and meals hiding? The food has been taken into your body but the waste hasn’t been released so it has to be somewhere.

In Chinese medicine, the intestines are related to ‘mentally letting go’. If one is unable to release and express emotions the function of the intestines will be altered and the body will not be
able to eliminate toxins. When trying to improve elimination it is imperative to calm the mind, let go of emotions and create a space for healing. Fall is a great time for letting go. The trees shed their leaves and so you too should shed that which you no longer need. Isn’t it time for you to let go, release the toxins and detoxify?

Don’t let the word detoxification turn you off. You may think it sounds like a New-age idea or something only celebrities who have addictions do. This is not true, detoxification is a normal, everyday function of life. It’s the body’s way of breaking down and eliminating anything that doesn’t belong. And, these days, there are a lot of things our bodies come into contact with that don’t belong. The bowel disposes of toxins from the digestive system and the liver helps clear the way for other organs to function properly and help rid of those unwanted toxins. Your body is
actually able to detoxify itself in a natural manner with the use of its lungs, liver and kidneys. However, if waste builds up, the level of toxins build up in our body and we get sick. With so many conditions on that list, it might seem that everyone is toxic, and to a certain extent that may be true. The reality is that many of you probably have symptoms of chronic toxicity but don’t realize that you’re toxic.

Some diseases you may suffer from if you are toxic:

• Autism

• Depression and other mood disorders
• Insomnia
• Heart disease
• Chronic fatigue syndrome

Your body will not release the toxins that is stored in your fat easily. These toxins may be very concentrated and can damage other organs if they are released. Go to the bathroom regularly – Keep your bowels moving, at least once or twice a day. And if you can’t get going, then you need some help. This can include taking two tablespoons of ground flax seeds or chia seeds, taking acidophilus or extra magnesium citrate capsules. If you have any chronic diseases or problems,you have to be careful about taking supplements and should work with your
doctor.

Eating and Supplementation – You should also eat organic produce and animal products to eliminate the toxins, hormones, and antibiotics in your food. If it is not in your budget, then properly
wash your fruits and vegetables to remove pesticides using a vinegar and water soak for 10 minutes, next add baking soda, these scrubbing bubbles and a vegetable brush followed with a good rinse will remove most toxins and dirt. Avoid sugar as well as other white foods. You should eat 8 to 10 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables a day. Take a high-quality multivitamin and mineral supplement.

“If-Then” Self-Defense

if-thenI am always interested in the studies of crime statistics, probabilities and scenarios. Certainly these studies yield important information and can act as prediction indicators of the occurrence of crime but the information they gather, simply put, are generalities. IF such and such is in place, THEN we may assume that x,y,z will follow. Basically, when it comes to crime indicators, I think the if-then scenario concludes the following predictability reliability: Sometimes. When it comes to predicting whether or not a certain person will commit a violent crime one must consider the individual with their ever changing experiences, chemistry and soul status. I am sure that even the most organic of us cannot predict with any certainty what another will do from one moment to the next.

No one is immune from crime. If we were, we wouldn’t need all those statistics, probabilities and studies to predict its occurrence in the first place. Life itself is an “if-then” scenario. If we are in the path of any number of scenarios that manifest into a violent crime, then we must know what to do. Danger is always brewing somewhere.

In terms of safety, we simply are safe until we are not. Sounds simple but it is true. Here’s another if-then scenario to think about. If you learn nothing, then you will know nothing. Although our basic instinct may be to survive in the face of danger, that often is not enough to actually survive. It is not enough to want to survive if you don’t know how.

Logically speaking, there are just too many threatening scenarios to think about preparing for. At the end of the day, we live with so many risks all around us that it just doesn’t make sense to consider them all and wonder which one we will most probably have to deal with. We rely on studies and statistics, to make educated choices about our safety based on our best guess of where we fit into those statistics and that is helpful, however, crime doesn’t always make sense therefore statistics can not be 100% accurate and only so much of our society can be patrolled at once.

Simply put you will never really know what is coming your way until it is happening.

The only thing we can really rely on is ourselves. The best defense to the myriad of risks that ebb and flow around each of our interactions in life is to know where we stand within them. By it’s very nature, violence is not a predictable event. If it were, no one would become a victim, and clearly, there are victims of violent crime every day all day long.

What safety really becomes is another if-then scenario. Simply put, if I am attacked, then I need to know what to do to survive. If I know what to do then it doesn’t really matter if I am attacked. I know how to defend myself so I will.  That skill will help me get out of trouble. It is the same way that I approach renting a car at the airport. If I know how to drive, then it really doesn’t matter what make or model they hand me the keys to.  If I know how to drive, then I will and increase my chances or arriving safely because I have the basic skill. You cannot always predict which threat in life you will have to deal with, but if you know how to protect yourself, then your chances of survival increase no matter what situation you find yourself in. But only if you have the skills.

We are not born with appropriate self-defends strategies because the nature of threats against us change with the climate of the era. However, it is essential that we do learn to protect ourselves because we never know which situation we will be handed. Without skills, we live a life of chance of which threat we may actually encounter, and common sense tells us that it is not a matter of If, but a matter of when.

Where do I even begin with Austria? Just to preface this article and provide clarity to those who may not have had the most extensive geographical education (sadly, many of us Americans fall into that category), no, I am not talking about the place that says “Goodday Mate” and, “Let’s put a little shrimp on the Barbie.” There are NO kangaroos in Austria. Think Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sound of Music, Edelweiss, German speaking, the alps, Yodeling, Lederhosen, and Dirndls (traditional Austrian dress). There you go,that’s Austria.

Growing up, I spent every other summer in Austria with my family at my grandparent’s house in a cute little ski town called Zell am See. For me, Austria is a home away from homes. That is why it is difficult for me to keep my recollections concise. I went back again recently with my husband, so I will write about the places in Austria we visited during that trip, Zell am See, Salzburg, and Innsbruck. True to the Sound of Music song, “These are a Few of my Favorite Things” about Austria:

Zell am See, Austria literally means city on the lake. It truly is a small town surrounding a lake at the base of a mountain called the Schmittenhöhe, on the eastern edge of the Kitzbühel Alps. There are many charming bed and breakfast type guest homes throughout Zell am See ( it is a very popular tourist destination), but we make my grandparents’ former homestead “Haus Otto” our temporary home. “Haus Otto” is nestled near the bottom of the Schmittenhöhe about a 20-minute walk uphill from the lake and town center. This guest home is the perfect winter ski lodge. Guests can ski down to take the lift to the top of the Schmittenhöhe, ski or snowboard the beautiful slopes to their hearts content, then ski right back to the front door of “Haus Otto” at the end of the day.

While “Haus Otto” is the perfect ski lodge in the winter, it is also the perfect location for avid hikers in the summer. It is almost a sin not to hike while in Zell am See Austria, and just as guests can ski the Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn (the glacier) to their hearts content in the winter, so can they hike these beautifully looming mountains in the summer. Hikers can begin on the hiking trail to the Schmittenhöhe right from the front door of “Haus Otto.” From there, hikers will walk through dense forests, vast cow fields, blueberry fields, and sometimes snow at the peak. The hike to the peak of the
Schmittenhöhe take between 4-5 hours (depending on how fast you hike), and to the middle station it takes about 2 hours.

The hiking is certainly beautiful in Zell am See, but you will work up a big appetite while trekking the looming mountains. That’s ok because in Austria they normally have at least one Alm or food lodge at the
top of the mountain (and sometimes at the middle station as well). It is at these alms that food is the most satisfying. The alms serve real traditional Austrian “hiker’s food.”

Two of my favorite Austrian dishes are found normally only after a long hike. The more popular of the two,“Kaisersmarren” is a scrambled up pancake-like dish with raisins, powdered sugar, and plum sauce or apple sauce served on the side. My favorite and the less popular of the two (and harder to find unless you have hiked a mountain) “Germknödel,” is a yeast dough dumpling filled with plum and topped with melted butter, sugar, and poppy seeds. Perhaps it is an acquired taste, but that’s okay because the Alm’s normally have the more traditional Austrian foods like sausages, pork, “Wiener Schnitzel,” potatoes, and bread.
